Discover Compost: A Hands-On Kids Lab at the Iowa Events Center

Discover Compost: A Hands-On Kids Lab is an interactive, curiosity-filled experience where young scientists get to explore soil, seeds, and compost up close. Children will use real microscopes (the kind scientists use to work together!) to compare Grow Gold Compost and regular soil, spotting the differences and learning why compost is such a powerful garden helper. We’ll also have an Iowa native plant seed mix and plant guide on hand so kiddos can examine different seeds under the microscope and choose one to plant themselves. Each child will plant their chosen seed in a plantable seed-starting pot, using a branded shovel they’ll get to take home—plus a brown paper bag to safely carry their garden goodies. We’ll wrap up the session with a storytime focused on composting and a healthy snack to fuel all that learning. It’s hands-on, science-filled, and full of earthy fun—perfect for curious minds who love to explore, learn, and get a little dirty along the way!
